Carnival Corp Authorized Salute which Led to Concordia Disaster at Sea, by Kirby Sommers

Carnival Corp (CCL), parent company of the Costa Concordia, are hoping the public will not know about their practice of "saluting" in their tireless effort to recruit new passengers.

The video clip shown here is just a few months old. It clearly shows the Costa Concordia sailing close to the island in Carnival Corporation's never ending quest of luring new customers onto their massive ships.

According to transcripts of his hearing with investigators, Captain Schettino insists Costa executives ordered him to maneuver the ship close to the island in order to "please passengers and attract publicity".

"It was planned, we should have done it a week earlier but it was not possible because of bad weather," Schettino said. "They (Carnival/Costa) insisted. They said: 'We do tourist navigation, we have to be seen, get publicity and greet the island'."

Carnival Corp (CCL) is the largest cruise ship operator in the world. The company was started in 1971 by Meshulam Riklis and Ted Arison. When Arison denounced his U.S. citizenship and returned to Israel in an effort to avoid paying estate and inheritance taxes on the $10 billion he socked away, his son Micky became Carnival’s CEO.

In 2012 Micky’s net worth was estimated at $4.5 billion (after dropping $1.3 billion) according to Forbes Magazine.
